   2017 NBA Manifesto

Spencer Dinwiddie
PG/SG, 6’6, 220lbs, 24 years old, 3 years of experience

A worthy late pick-up in which he had a couple of big offensive games while particularly asserting himself on defence, using his size and length to exert pressure on the pick-and-roll. Dinwiddie was measured, under-stood his role (to defend both guard spots, to move the ball around, to not turn it over, probe, attack when given a clearish lane, and occasionally stick a jump shot), and did it well. Amongst those who played more than 1,000 minutes, Dinwiddie was first in offensive rating by a long way. Good performance.

Player Plan: Two unguaranteed minimum salary seasons remaining. Keep.

Phoenix, above, are the fastest paced team in the league. Brooklyn, Dinwiddie’s team, are the second fastest team in the league.

The two are playing each other tonight, in what should be a track meet that automatically favours the ball handlers. Dinwiddie is the third guard in the rotation, but he plays a lot and he always plays well, frequently outscoring in fantasy points those who cost more in fantasy dollars. Look for him to do it again tonight.

Jeremy Lin is out for the season, and usual starter D’Angelo Russell missed the last Nets game. Dinwiddie stepped into the starting spot, playing a significant role in an upset victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, with 22 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Although he is now fairly proven as a regular backup NBA point guard, his fantasy value is not normally huge; However, it seems Russell will once again be absent tonight, making Dinwiddie a valuable pick.

2017-11-26

With both Jeremy Lin and D’Angelo Russell out, Dinwiddie has the Nets’ primary ball handling and playmaking role for the foreseeable future. Now up to extremely healthy averages on the season of 12.9 points and 6.0 assists per game, while still turning the ball over at a ridiculously low rate of 1.1 per game, Dinwiddie is an advanced statistics demon at this point, and playing his way into a long term starting role somewhere. He is every bit the calibre of more noted peers such as Darren Collison and Jeff Teague even if his reputation and fantasy price are yet to catch up accordingly.

In the absences of both Jeremy Lin (out for the season) and D’Angelo Russell (out for quite a while at least), Dinwiddie will start at the point guard position for the foreseeable future and get every minute he can handle. And he has proven he can handle a lot. On the season, Dinwiddie is averaging 11.0 points and 5.6 assists per game, alongside an amazingly low 1.0 turnovers per game, being extremely dependable as both a shooter and a floor general. And, lest we forget, as a fantasy pick.

Dinwiddie, a regular feature on this list, is good and valuable at the best of times, with averages of 9.9 points and 5.4 assists per game on the season. At this price, we could recommend Dinwiddie every night that he plays. But what especially helps his cause tonight is that normal point guard starter D’Angelo Russell will be absent due to injury. And whenever that happens, Dinwiddie becomes particularly valuable.

In his last nine games, Dinwiddie has not had a single game of less than 25.9 fantasy points. Averaging 34.2 over that span, Dinwiddie is still outperforming his fantasy salary even when his fantasy salary continues to increase. He is outperforming Lonzo Ball and costs $3 million less. So even if you like Ball more, you must consider Dinwiddie here.

Note: Non-US teams that the player has played for are, unless stated otherwise, from the top division in that nation. If a league or division name is expressly stated, it's not the top division. The only exceptions to this are the rare occasions where no one league is said to be above the other, such as with the JBL/BJ League split in Japan.
