London Perrantes
PG - 6’2, 190lbs - 23 years old - 1 year of experience
In the G-League with the Canton Charge, Perrantes averaged 11.9 points and 7.8 assists per game, alongside only 2.9 turnovers per contest. The solid four-year college player could be a solid four-year G-League player, too. The question here is whether he can ever progress beyond that.
A very intelligent player, Perrantes moves his feet well and makes consistently good reads on defence, rather than being a constant harassment or having great hands or anything. Similarly cerebral offensively, Perrantes has excellent passing vision and feeds the paint with a bit of flair; permanently unselfish, his instinct is to pass first, and any scoring opportunity he engages with come off of that threat to pass first.
All of those are good qualities to have in a point guard. But not necessarily an NBA point guard. As an NBA prospect, Perrantes has a lot to contend with. He is not big for an NBA point guard, and he certainly is not fast for one. He is also going to be 24 by the start of next season, and when there are Kobi Simmons-type NBA prospect point guards out there, that is enough to matter. He is not a particularly good outside shooter, either, and lacks NBA dynamicism in any facet of the game. Perrantes’s combination of skill and smarts will see him have a lengthy professional career, but this level might not be within his grasp.
Going forward, with or without LeBron, the Cavaliers sorely need point guards. It is hard, however, to see how Perrantes can be one of them.
Player Plan: Has a second year on his two-way contract but I do not believe he will be the best candidate for this slot going forward. If he could help at the NBA level beyond the level of Johnny Rotationplayer, he would already have done so.
