Creative Financing in the NBA, 2010

After the Jones buyout came their renouncements. With the team option on Mario Chalmers exercised, the team promptly renounced everyone other than Dwyane Wade [sic] and Joel Anthony. This meant that 10 free agents from the previous season were renounced; Jermaine O'Neal, Quentin Richardson, Udonis Haslem, Dorell Wright, Yakhouba Diawara, Rafer Alston, Carlos Arroyo, Jamaal Magloire, Shavlik Randolph and Kenny Hasbrouck. Some free agents from previous seasons were also still clogging up cap space; namely, Alonzo Mourning, Steve Smith, John Wallace, Wang Zhi Zhi, Gary Payton, Bimbo Coles, Christian Laettner, and Shandon Anderson. In total, before these renouncements took place, Miami's free agent cap holds amounted to a total of $88,184,132, $24,166,800 alone was for Jermaine O'Neal.

   NBA Fantasy Preview - 26th November 2017

Given a big responsibility in the absence of Mike Conley, Chalmers is responding with big fantasy performances. Even when his shot is off, as it was in a 2-11 shooting performance two games ago, the 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 2 steals he posted still made for a 28.4 fantasy point performance. With six consecutive 20+ fantasy point performances and an average of 28.5 across that time, Chalmers is still a good fantasy value pick even with the recent spike in his price. Get it while it lasts.

   NBA Fantasy Preview - 22nd November 2017

We suggested Chalmers as a fantasy pick before the last game on account of his importance to the team in the absence of Mike Conley Jr, and he came through with a peach of a performance. Chalmers recorded 21 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, a steal and 40.2 fantasy points in the game, his third 27+ fantasy point game in the last four. With a 29.9 fantasy point average over that span, Chalmers is almost a must-pick at this tiny price.

With Mike Conley Jr out for a while, it will be Chalmers that gets the primary point guard role. In the two Conley-less games thus far, Chalmers has averaged 26.3 fantasy points, recording big minutes even when shooting badly, for he is too important to them now. In yielding a good number of assists and steals per game, both high value statistics, Chalmers has fantasy value even when his shot is off.

   NBA Fantasy Preview - 7th November 2017

Chalmers has found himself quite a large role with the Grizzlies this year, playing 23.6 minutes per game despite shooting 33.3% from the floor, taking bad shots, being slow footed post-surgery and fouling a lot. It has been partly due to injuries to off-guards, partly due to the worse struggles of Andrew Harrison, and partly because outside of Mike Conley, Chalmers does offer the best backcourt playmaking on the team. All of which remain true enough tonight. With averages of 8/3, Chalmers offers something for a low price.

Note: Non-US teams that the player has played for are, unless stated otherwise, from the top division in that nation. If a league or division name is expressly stated, it's not the top division. The only exceptions to this are the rare occasions where no one league is said to be above the other, such as with the JBL/BJ League split in Japan.
